Daily Painting 970 Beautiful Day at White City Park

Its oil plein air, alla prima. I painted it at the park today, really pretty out. The big white egret was in the bottle brush tree for most of the painting. Little birds were singing in the oak tree that I was sitting under and pooping on my palette. ( I had the painting tipped a bit so it was safe.) Its 8 x 10 inches, $300.

what's wrong here??

As Sandra painted the Dalton (GA) depot, this white van parked directly between her and her subject. He smiled, acknowledged us, and pulled into this particular (one of 15) parking space. It was too incredibly funny to be upsetting. What are people thinking????

"New Love"

About This Painting:
I have been trying to get out more and work on location. It is alla prima (all at once).
I had set up near my driveway and then found out I was in pile of ants. Not fun! Had to get some ant killer and relocate, but I didn't want to change the view. Got close enough, and it seems to have turned out alright!

About This Painting:
I painted this doble hibiscus yesterday in the late afternoon out in my yard. It was done alla prima (all at once).
I used watercolor this time, which is not my usual medium. But I hope to start using watercolors more often. I love the watermarks and cool effects you get sometimes, like little surprises!

Meadowlawn Morning by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on September 8th (completed at 10:30am)...$85 including shipping....This was a rather interesting painting being somewhat of an experiment. I had pre-toned the panel using random areas of ultramarine blue, yellow ochre with alizarine crimson designating the focal point which was the stand of trees in the upper left. In the actual painting, my palette consisted of yellow ochre, indian red, prussian blue and white. I may have used a touch of ivory black in the greens. Using a limited palette in the toning process, then using another limited palette in the final painting is something I'll explore further.

Plein Air Painters and Cyclists converge on the historic town of vNew Bern. NC for great causes...

Sunny Shadows

"Sunny Shadows"

About This Painting:

Got out this morning, and painted these lovely shadows on the side of the house! I was interested in the way the bright yellow plant contrasted with the blue cast shadows on the house. I also liked the way the whole painted translated into spots of color and light.

Plein Air Painters and Cyclists converge on the historic town on New Bern, NC for great causes!

The Eastern NC Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society announced over 2,400 cyclists and 300 volunteers participated in last weekend’s Bike MS: Historic New Bern Ride. Cyclists left from Union Point Park in New Bern for the successful 21st annual Bike MS September 12-13. Over $1.34 million has been counted to date, and officials project that they are on target to meet their $1.7 million goal.

Also converging on the historic town were plein air artists from Eastern North Carolina participating in the International Plein Air Painter's (IPAP) 7th annual Worldwide Paint Out (WWPO). The paint out is designed to bring recognition to the tradition of painting "en plein air"... the French term for "in the open air". The event brings plein air artists from all over the world who agree to paint outdoors on the same date by organizing events in their local area. Plein air painters from Onslow, Craven, Beaufort, Carteret, Wayne, Pamlico, and Pender counties were present for the special 2 day event.

The following artists participated in the 7th WWPO:
Susan Cheatham (organizer)
Bernie Rosage Jr (organizer)

Orchid Study

"Orchid Study"

About This Painting:
Got out this morning and painted these lovely orchids that my husband grows. This is actually the second try, as the first one got to detailed in the background and took away from the flowers, So I simplified the background and then repainted the orchids!

It was a wonderful morning, cool and breezy for a change. I was enjoying myself and then just as I was finishing the second try, my husband starts weed-eating! There were bugs and grass flying everywhere. So I called it quits and helped with the yard work.

Thanks for looking!

September Moon en Plein-air 140 & 141

Two 8x10 canvas panels painted en Plein-air from my deck between 11:15 to 12:00 midnight. This time I turned the deck lights on...worked perfect! No clouds except for an occasional whisper. The moon was full and bright, but a little boring without clouds. I started to focus on the Moons surface and it's intense reflecting light.

Spider Lily Morn by Fawn McNeill

"Spider Lily Morn"

About This Painting:
I got out very early this morning, to paint before the heat is unbearable. The spider lilies are blooming everywhere, and these had a nice tree behind them to set them off. I darkened the colors of the sky too, as the sunlight began to shine right on the lilies. The colors were amazing.

I had a client ask me if they were real, she said they look like something from outer space!

Painted en plein air, alla prima. (Out doors, all in one session.)

Bethlehem Blooms by BJ Wright

7"x5" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on August 26th (completed at 10:30am)...$35 including shipping...Bethlehem Gardens in Varnell, GA, is 7 acres of growing things, lovingly planted by the hand of Ms. Ruby. She cares for her gardens and 39 cats (yes, 39) with the thought that all living things are by the hand of God. She graciously invited us to paint among the potted plants and flowing fountains. And after about two hours, she surprised us with freshly sliced cold watermelon. Ms. Ruby is a Southern lady indeed.

musing...reflecting...pondering...bowling

Painting en plein air is like bowling...there are hundreds of things to think about (all at the same time). In bowling, the object is to knock down all the pins. In painting, the object is to ---- well, there's the kick. Does the artist render the painting as an identical twin of the object being painted? The artist may chose to do that, but there are hundreds, thousands, millions of other possibilities. Changing the background, the foreground, the colors, the shapes, adding or omitting items, moving things around a bit (or a lot) - there's just so much to consider when doing a painting.

There are also choices of subject. Do I paint the whole world? Or just one little corner? Or just one flower? Where do I set up my easel? Where do I stand? Or do I sit? Or perhaps crouch to get that perfect perspective?

Did I remember to consider the sun's movement across the sky when I chose the subject and easel placement? How will the subject remain lit as I paint? Or will the tree shadow encroach too soon? Will my canvas/palette be well lit but still in shadow during the painting process? And if not, where did I put my painting umbrella? (There is broken sun/shade falling across the canvas in this photo...which made painting more difficult.)

Choices --- every artist makes hundreds during the creation of a single painting. A photograph captures just what the lens sees - no more, no less. A painting is filtered through the eyes and mind of the artist, which makes each original painting a unique piece of artwork.

And original art makes a unique gift. Christmas is coming (again) this year.

A Song Singing by BJ Wright

10"x8" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on August 25th (completed at 10:00am)...$85 including shipping...Falling water has such a soothing sound, like a continuous and never ending song. We painted at Prater's Mill, near Varnell (GA) this morning. I've never seen this water blue, even under the bluest sky. The uneven dam allows the flowing water to make unusual waterfalls.

8"x10" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on August 13th (completed at 11:00am)...$95 including shipping....This was painted at the historic Varnell House, built in 1847, in Varnell, GA. For awhile it served as Federal headquarters during the Civil War and was struck by "minnie balls" during several skirmishes in the area. Libby Sunsets # 124 & 125

Last night I started painting 8x10 panels en Plein Air sunsets from Richmond's Libby Terrace. The sun seems to move slower at sunset, or at least you get more time.....this is totally about the interaction of the sun and clouds and the atmospheric condition caused by it.

three at Red Clay

I painted at Red Clay State (TN) Park today during the annual "Cherokee Days of Recognition". These were shot in (bad) indoor lighting, but at least you can see that three paintings made their way home with me. I'll get better images and post them soon with the accompanying explanations/stories/thoughts.

Finding the Way Through by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on July 28th (completed at 1:20pm as lightning started flashing)....$95 including shipping...I recall a science teacher once saying that water finds the path of least resistance, not unlike some of us. We had started painting around 8:30am at Barnsley Gardens near Adairsville, GA, when the sun was perfectly seeking out corners in the ruins. As we ate lunch, the clouds began to bank and we knew we wouldn't have much time before the rains came. Being overcast, the colors were muted and subtle, yet still wondrous.

15 Minute Sunrise 115 & 116

I decided to paint en Plein Air this morning...sooo......my favorite subject, the sun. We had dew with mist and no clouds. I did (2) 8x10 panels within a 20 minute period. The second panel was something I've seen before, but never was able to get, a misty creamy pastel with a pale yellow sun, no orange (mine has a little). This time I was able to get reasonable photos with my new UV lens. I'll use the photos with the study for a larger painting, I'll do today.

Plein air painting while fresh on the trail of Ben Long's frescoes...

Tami, Liv, and I are enjoying a week in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina. The weather has been clear and cool... almost an enigma for July in the south. Between hiking, horseback riding, plein air painting, picnicking, and just relaxing... the three of us have manged to visit three of the Ben Long fresco locations on the Fresco Trail.
.
.

This is one of my favorite spots on the trail... I have painted this small church on several occasions. Last Monday, Tami dropped me off to plein air paint while she and Liv went to the newly remodeled library in West Jefferson.

I found a nice shady spot under a huge Linden tree... 2 1/2 hours of peaceful recollections of my sister, Kristi, and savoring the beauty of this sacred spot.

Finished painting... "St Mary's"... 8x10" Oil on panel by Bernie Rosage Jr, en plein aire, July 20, 2009.
.
We have been going to Glendale Springs for years to visit George Bell's Greenhouse Crafts Shop... our favorite shop in the Blue Ridge. Our journey there would not be complete without a trip across the street to Holy Trinity and the frescoes there. I have painted this small church as well.

.
.
We had a cool visit with my cousin Pam (Aunt Pammie) who lives in Morganton. She took us on a tour of the town... what a beautiful town too. The highlight of our tour was the The City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium.. (CoMMA) for short. The crowning jewel of the CoMMA was the ceiling fresco by Ben Long titled... "Sacred Dance & The Muses". We actually sat on recliners on a revolving floor to view the awesome work... how cool is that! You can see Liv enjoying the fresco in this photo.

Liv, Pam, and Tami enjoying the comfort and the artwork.
Ben Long even included a self portrait in this work showing his exhaustion from his labors.
.
These wonderful works and experiences only prove my theory that every artist and art patron already knows... There is nothing like viewing art in person!
.
Thanks for listening to me ramble... feel free to comment...

Red Earth by BJ Wright

4"x6" oil on sanded panel, painted on July 14th around 10:00am ... Just before time to pack up after a morning of painting, I picked up this little sanded panel and put down some paint. The rough surface slurped up the paint and I could feel it wearing down my brush. It's an interesting surface...don't know if I'll use it again...but interesting.

The trees were glowing as the sun raced across the sky. Paint quick, quick, quick.

Southern Moon with following star # 105 &106

The third and last moon study (bottom) This is my favorite, painted en Plein Air @ 1:30 AM on 7/10/09. I started with clouds and adjusted as it cleared, because of something I saw, I followed this up with a small studio painting later the same morning (top). I used the study and a fresh memory as my guide. The finale, for lessons learned during this moon phase.
I didn't know it at the time, this would be the beginning of a major pivotal point. Plein Air served its purpose well, by heightening my observation skills, I'm sure I'll continue to do it, but only as a discovery tool. I found it indispensable, learning how to paint details, such as fast moving rapids, the sun and finally the moon. As I make new discoveries I'll be sure to post! I'll also check daily and see what everyone is doing :=)

Southern Moon # 102

The second study on the morning of 7/9/09 @ 1:00 AM - clear skies, moon in a Southern location. This was the first time I noticed the following star, I didn't include the star in my 12x12 study. The first study, my moon had a thin cloud veil so the normal halo was only a soft glow. I use Ivory black with all colours in my normal palette. The object of the studies, to learn about nocturnal colouring.

15 Minute Sunrise # 107

Hi all, This morning I had some new colours to play with....HOC H212 Scarlet Lake and Williamsburg (handmade...proof by the price)Fanchon Red or Rouge Vermillonn`e. I have two problems the sun and a pot of geraniums...need I say more!

I like both of these colours, because of the pigment saturation. The Scarlet Lake in this instance was more useful....still trying to get the hot coral colour I'm really after! I think it will probably come from using copal glazes. I used 1/2" and #8 Royal soft grip SG4020 Filbert...short handle, which gives the 8x10 study a different softer look. It was partly cloudy with a blue grey colouring. The mid-ground field is almost always a pop-out feature. The nice thing about this view....I can either have trees or not, simply by moving around the garden.

I used a cadmium yellow deep toned panel....I think it was a mistake!

Soft Morning by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on July 7th (completed at 8:00am)...$95 including shipping....The clouds were banked in a myriad of colors as the sun struggled over the mountain. Photography of this particular painting was difficult. The yellows are much softer and purples are more muted in the original. Apparently I'm entering the 'purple period' of my painting career...it seems to emerge in my more recent works.

Whitman House, Ringgold, GA

General Sherman spent the night in this house. He was a gracious guest but the owner wouldn't accept his money. She only wanted Conferate money. He is said to have made the comment "She hasn't lost yet" about the Civil War.
Originally before the new Ringgold City Hall was built, the Depot could be seen from the upstairs window. That's why I painted this corner. Not to mention the light was right on it.

Cupcake

I had already named this "Cupcake" and the title was confirmed by a man walking his dog in the park this morning.
I still had on my painting apron as I trudged down the steps with my "wheelie" cart. He commented that I must be a cook. Well, then I decided to call it a chocolate cupcake...it looks so brown with the sun in my eyes. I admit I took a little license and moved the sun a bit and didn't move my shadows. I am blind, needless to say. BJ wasn't there to loan me her umbrella and I had left mine in the car. I had already trekked down the road, up through the field and back to the car and back again for my cell phone just in case BJ called. And I decided to paint quickly. I painted this very quickly in about 30 minutes. Well, obviously!!!!

Crown Cotton Mills

We posted last Tuesday (on the blog Painting Georgia) that BJ and I would be painting at Crown Cotton Mills which is now made into condominums. The managers were very hospitable to us and we hope we may get a show there in the winter.
I didn't complete the crown on the spire to my satisfaction but hope to return to do another and get it right next time.

Front Porch Geraniums

Compare this to the beginning of the day. I worked on this around 10 pm last night. I couldn't leave it alone. I hope I kept enough of the AC/Burnt Umber undertones. That was what I was striving for in this painting.
What cha think?

blues, yellows, reds

7"x5" oil done while playing around with blues, yellows and reds. The morning sunlight was absolutely orange when it hit the hay bales and crib corner. Beyond the distant misty field, the mountain was blue/purple. The tree bark was shining almost red. This was a fun little piddly, cartoony way to spend time listening to the birds.

From the deck in 15 minutes # 94

The typical 8x10 is too small for this scene. Today, I was only able to get familiar with the colour range. I also get more time to play, because of the foreground trees...some of which are about to bloom a nice pink. When the sun hits, the blooms sparkle and are tipped with hot yellow orange. Today I used a #18 synthetic soft bristle Filberte (I prefer blended sable brights) and a # 6 bright for the smaller calligraphy detail.

From the deck in 15 minutes # 92

I used a thin cadmium red toned background (too light). Over the last month I've been reducing my palette. Currently it consists of yellow-pale, cadmium yellow-deep, orange and red, permanent green light, cerulean blue, dioxane purple and of course titanium soft white. I use a wide range of cadmium's, because it's easier. The only color I would add back is French Ultramarine. I also use a toned disposable palette by Stephen Quiller. My brush work is deliberately more impasto and towards palette knife. While these might be sell-able, my only objective , is to study colour relationships to each other and light.

Exploring What's There by BJ Wright

10"x8" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on Tuesday June 30th (completed at 9:55am)...$85 including shipping...Sandra and I explored Crown Gardens and Archives in Dalton (GA) and found a painting in every direction. This small addition to the main structure was set deep in shadows and as the sun crept in, I began painting using only yellow ochre, alizarin crimson and ultramarine blue (and of course white). I had challenged myself to use a very limited palette. Next time I think the mixing will go faster.

Early at the Tunnel by BJ Wright

7"x5" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on June 24th (completed at 8:20am)...$35 including shipping...The historic Tunnel Hill railroad tunnel is hidden in this plein air study, but is somewhere beyond the darkness on the lower left side. The sun had cleared Chetogeeta Mountain, turning the sky almost instantly from a golden haze to a clear blue. Taking the road to the left carries the viewer to the mouth of the tunnel. 15 Minute Sunrise 87 & 88

I was up and ready this morning. I wanted to catch the very first peek the sun makes each morning...it has a colour that's almost impossible to capture (top panel)......not there yet, but that's a secret she's not going to keep long. I had to make a quick decision to jump ship and start another one because the sun suddenly became an intense yellow and the surrounding atmosphere a warm liquid creamy gray....needed to catch that! I think I did ......

Hay's In by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on June 24th (completed 8:00am)...$85 including shipping...Getting outside to paint in 95+ degree heat is nuts...so I get out really early to miss the heat. The early sun quickly rose to show its orange light on the recently baled hay. It's hard to believe this was just 3 days into early Summer.

15 Minute Sunrise # 76 & 77

It looked like rain this morning so I missed a great misty sunrise, but....here's two from the other day, again very misty morning. This one (bottom) marked a pivotal point in my painting. I did an 11x14 (top) immediately after. I could have been anywhere...studio...it didn't matter... I was painting from experience and memory. I was using the scene in front of me as a minor reference......anyway natures moment had moved on. The 8x10 became the paint chip for the larger work (works better in the studio).....now Plein Air and studio are monolithic .....how cool is that!

First Hay of Summer by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on June 18th (completed at 9:10am)...$85 for painting only, $120 framed (as shown)...The hay was freshly cut and the meadow lay golden in the morning sun. Crickets and birds were the only sounds heard, except for the westbound freight train.

Among the Tree Shadows by BJ Wright

10"x8" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on June 17th...completed at 9:30am...$85 including shipping. The house hidden behind the trees is the Clisby Austin House, located in Tunnel Hill GA. The adjoining property hosts the annual "Battle of Tunnel Hill" Civil War reenactment in September. As shown in the painting, the hay was ready for mowing. I'll return soon to capture the bales.

First Hay of Summer...progressing

We were there before 7am to begin painting the first cutting of Summer hay. Getting an early start to beat the heat is a must. It was 97 degrees later in the day. This is an 8"x10" oil on RayMar panel painted en plein air. At the time of the photo, it was still progressing but was finished alla prima. I just haven't taken the finished photo yet. Since this area seems to be famous for its "North Georgia green green", I often push colors into their blue or yellow zones.

Lunch Time @ Swan Lake # 68

8x10 Oil on Panel - I added the family, geese and ducks at the last minute. The nice thing about Bryd Park, it has grand scale, large lakes and constant movement. A great place to study and paint human behavior at play. Occasionally they will mix it with the wildlife - as in this setting.

Beyond the Lilies by BJ Wright

10"x8" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima on June 10th '09...completed about 1:45pm...at Barnsley Gardens just outside Adairsville, GA...$85 for the painting or $125 as shown framed. It was my first encounter with the magic that is Barnsley Gardens...what a feast for the eyes of an artist!!! I'll definitely return for another art day outing.

What I like about this site

I like when a painting is posted and it has a story to go with it. I like from a collectors standpoint that story makes it personal. I like that anyone can join in and comment or not. I like that it becomes a journal for a group of people with the same interest. I like that we have the same funny problems. I like that you can price and sell your art work. I like the site because it's not cluttered but very simple and direct. I like that the posts have a contiguous thread and are not tucked away once posted. I like that the members seem to be down to earth and simply like to paint. I like most of all, the site is not pompous, but unassuming and not trying to dissect the Plein Air movement.

Water Before the Bridge by BJ Wright

This is a 10"x8" oil (June 6th) which I feel still needs some touch ups. I always try to finish my plein air paintings at one sitting (alla prima) without tweaking or 'noodling' them after I get them home. This one, however, needs a little more work. I'm not satisfied with the reflections and the foliage needs some value change. If the changes seem drastic, I'll post the noodled result.

Sailors' Delight by BJ Wright

9"x12" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on 4-24-09 (completed at 8:10pm) showing part of Lake Lanier near Buford GA. - $118 for the painting only (including shipping), but if you'd like it framed (as is, $140 including shipping). Usually I prefer my comfort zone of painting during morning light, but I liked this challenge of late afternoon. The breeze was refreshing after a long day of plein air work.

Rainbow River by BJ Wright

Here's an 8"x10" oil, painted en plein air, alla prima, during the Buford (GA) paintout on June 24th ( completed around 1:15pm). Here, just below the Buford dam, the fish hatchery had stocked rainbow trout. The title "Rainbow River" comes from the trout, but also because the light was dancing off the swirling waters. It was a totally wonderful day for fishing, kayaking...and painting. $85 including shipping for ONLY the painting...but if you'd like it complete with frame, $115 will do it.

Harry Griffin Park Early by BJ Wright

10"x8" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on Saturday May 30th - completed around 9:00am - $85 including shipping - I had driven to several favorite painting spots and couldn't decide where to set my easel. I almost took photos and returned home (shame on me). But then I heard me, telling me --- out loud --- "Good grief! Just get out and paint!" And so I did.

15 Minute Sunrise # 54

8x10 Linen panel - Cadmium red with the orange is an important part - not just orange alone. This morning I left cad red off my palette but, quickly added it. The sun when it first breaks through is more red than orange.

I didn't realize it but, I had an audience who said I was aglow with red from the sun - How interesting is that? A photographer recently told me if you get stuck with what's in front - turn around and look behind you. In this case maybe the artist was the point of interest.

15 Minute Sunrise # 52

8x10 Linen panel - It seems the best way to start is with the sun - almost pure yellow and orange values from the tube and work out adding the original yellow and orange values to all other colors. It takes more pure color than you expect.

Byrd Park - Lower Lake - Vintage Home # 51

The Beautiful cloud cover was still around while I painted, but turned to rain moments after I finished and was heading to the car.

Richmond has a bountiful supply of old large vintage presidential homes, most built prior to the last market crash of 1929. Reminds me of California and the new crop you can't give away. Richmond may have escaped the most recent events. My wife and I were fortunate enough to have owned several of these vintage masterpieces. Most of the new crop unfortunately are not as good, but poor out of scale copies of the renaissance we experienced during the early teens and twenties of the last century. Now that the homes have some historical value many are experiencing a new revival.

An interesting side note Las Vegas had a great deal to do with the new emergence of the arts and craftsmanship the country exhibited over the last 10 or 15 years. It would have never happened without them. They had the money and desire for mainstream respectability to get the job done. They, through new technology and innovation made things previously cost prohibitive - possible.

Byrd Park - Red Building # 49

11x14 Panel - This is a maintenance building next to the lower lake. The Canadian geese came along as I was finishing up. The real painting however would have been the cloud cover - spectacular - it really came into play as I was leaving. If the clouds stay around we should have a nice sunset.

North from Snodgrass Hill by BJ Wright

May 22, '09, just before noon...it was overcast, then sunny, then drizzly...in short, painting en plein air was a bit of a challenge. The light was changing by the minute/second and capturing the correct colors was almost impossible. This is a slice of what I painted that day. Going too dark with my darks is something I need to work on, especially in such changeable light. This was a 6"x12" mini canvas, but I think a larger version would have better captured the meadow's expanse. Gonna work on that.

15 Minute Sunrise # 45

8x10 Sunrise Study - I started late and wasn't prepared so.... I ended up with little time. The object was to catch the intensity of the sun - the problem - it's difficult to get the color values right around the sun so it will pop. You have a tendency to make it much too light, mostly because the sun alters your color perception. I think it will take a few more cracks at it.

Confederate Memorial Wreath by BJ Wright

9"x12" oil on Raymar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on Tuesday, April 28th '09, at Old Stone Church near Ringgold GA. $120 including shipping -
The wreath on the door commemorates Confederate Memorial Day which is a state holiday in some states in the US. In Georgia, it was April 27th. It gives people a chance to honor and remember the Confederate soldiers who died or were wounded during the Civil War in the 1860s. Old Stone Church was used as a hospital.

Rainy Day on the James #34

This particular morning I set up on a rock pad in the James. It rained most of the session so rain water became one of my mixing mediums. A side benefit, water mixed with oil will tack up quickly. It might work for under painting in small amounts. A photographer, who started following me around a few days earlier was also there to get a silhouette shot of me painting. I, on the other hand was waiting for a dramatic sun break in the cloud cover....neither got our wish.

James sunset @ Belle Isle # 36

This is a small 8x10 sunset study over a period of several hours. I had to adjust the color values through the whole process and stopped about a half hour before the sun set. I also use a jury rig set up that really worked well. I needed to be flexible. I have some new gear on order that will solve most issues. I used my palette as an easel with a simple clip to hold the panel. The palette also became the carrier. I think you could use this for panels up to 11x14 with ease. I was able to adjust for glare and check color value instantly. You just can't do that easily with the traditional easel set.

Belle Isle Hydro Dam # 30

My path, rain or shine is now leading to a series of paintings of the James River from Belle Isle and the North and South banks. The river is high and fast because of all the recent rain. I'm on a small narrow foot bridge at the top of an old hydro plant dam facing toward the south bank. I didn't realize it at the time but the right cascade was dropping onto a huge rock. The South front face drops another 10 or 15 feet and creates an imposing view from the south shore. This 11x14 panel was painted in the morning. The first of two over a 6 hour period that day. If any of you come to Richmond don't miss this area, perfect for a Plein Air painter. It will test your ability.

Rainbow Stream by BJ Wright

This is another plein air oil painting completed on site at the Historic Buford (GA) Paint out on April 24th. "Rainbow Stream" denotes not only the many colors reflected in the waters, but also the trout swimming about. The location is just downstream from the Buford dam. There were dozens of fishermen and kayakers enjoying the perfect morning. I popped the finished painting into a frame and delivered it (wet) to the Tannery Row Artist Colony for exhibit throughout the month of May.

Stormy James # 27

I'm not going to forget this one. Yesterday, Cooper my dog and I got caught in a nasty lighting and thunderstorm on a hill over looking the James River. I did have a small umbrella and was able to finish by staying with it a few more minutes. No way was I leaving, the river surface was absolutely luminous. I didn't have time to breakdown before taking shelter so my little 12x12 suffered more than 15 minutes of hard rain with no apparent damage. It makes you rethink your sanity and gear.

Catfish Hole # 19

Catfish Hole is a small cove off the James at The Great ships Locks - today it had a constant flow of visitors from Canadian Geese with chicks, Herrings fishing - I might add much better at it than the two cat fishermen I show in my small 12x12 painting. Great place to paint it has movement and dramatic light filtration through the trees. Did I mention a hot 96 degrees.

Oak Study

"Oak Study"

I went to the coast and painted with my plein air group today. This old oak blew over years ago. The way it grew back interested me because of its very graceful shape. Azalea Stream

Spring at Callaway Gardens will overwhelm you with all the beauty around each turn. This year we have had days and days of rain. Painting in between the rain storms has been fun and now that the rain has stopped it will be fun to see the sun sparkle through the pine branches on to the azaleas at Overlook Garden inside Callaway. Nice day so I headed for the bay with dog and paints in tow. Boy was it cold even with the sun I could only take 2 hours - managed to paint the Loggia 11x14 on board while I waited for the background paint to dry for a shot of Fishing Bay in the distance. The Rauke Loggia was painted from the pool. I'm going back this weekend to finish the bay shot.

Pathway Puddles by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima on 3-24-09 (completed around 3:15) - $85 including shipping - This is the first time I've been out painting en plein air in a long, long time...well, since November anyway. I usually paint during morning hours, but conditions haven't been right for awhile...but this particular afternoon seemed perfect. The more I painted, the more the clouds rolled in. Puddles on the gravel walkway danced in the changing light, so Mr. Coker's chimney and the oak tree's old and new foliage had to relent.

Daily Painting 804 Palms at the Backus Museum

This looks a bit different than my usual style because I took a workshop this weekend that fellow artist George Love put on. She was teaching about glazing and so we just used brushes. We started out with a black and white acrylic painting and then when that dried we added the oil paints in colors. It was super to try a different technique. We were outside so I did the three palms I could see in the park next to the museum.

I had a very busy week, Art Mundo put on all these demos and workshops friday and saturday. I took this workshop and one on bookbinding and another on botanical printing. Then I gave an oil painting demo saturday, I'll post that tomorrow. It was a whole lot of fun and I hope we get to do it all again.

Friday evening I went to the Gallery 14 reception in Vero, I have three paintings in their Small is Big showing this month. Thursday was my reception at the Molly House, that was lovely and I sold a couple of paintings.

Its 8 x 10 acrylic and oil, $300.

About This Painting:
This is the first painting I did last Tuesday, in Fort Pierce. I had painted in some of the sea grapes while I was there, and then decided to add more when I got home. I may have over done it!!!! But I like it. I also added the pelicans, as they were everywhere!

Enjoy!

Daily Painting 797 Its Me or Marty Little Jim's Bait and Tackle

I am naming the painting "Its Me or Marty" or "Little Jim's Bait and Tackle" The guy by the truck was walking towards us so I painted him in, thinking that spot in the painting needed something. He came over to look and I asked him who he thought it was and he said "its me or Marty." Below is the man and the truck and above is the whole painting. Its plein air, alla prima, it was a beautiful, breezy day. My group of painters, the Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast will be painting there again this tuesday. Its a fun place to paint with lots of things going on, boats and birds and interesting people. The painting is 8 x 10, oil, $200.

Winter Blooms, Bogainvillaeas

"Winter Blooms"

These bougainvillaeas are blooming in my front yard. So striking against all the brown grass and leafless trees. It was windy and I didn't stay out long, but I really enjoyed it.

This is my first chance to do any plein air painting in months. After my husband got so sick I only stole an hour here and there while he was sleeping. So good to have him back! He is about 80 % back to his old self. I should say his new self. He is so grateful and opens up so much more often now.

Sandra paints Alla Prima

January has been a little too chilly for Sandra to get out side so she opted to paint in the cosmetics department at Hamilton Place Mall's Belk Department Store at their Senior Expo. "I received a favorable response from the manager and employees". It was announced over the intercom. The announcement was that Artist Sandra Babb is demostrating her craft.
Over all it was a pleasant experience lasting from 10 am til 1 pm. I may have painted for an hour total time. The Events Coordinator has invited us back and I'm game to try it again. Note that I put the sign in the painting---"At Your Service." This little study sold and I slipped it into a Belk's plastic bag with tissue paper from the Chanel Department. Fun to go home with the new owner. It is a pastel and I hope she made it to the frameshop intact.

Daily Painting 771 Old Log Plein Air Alla Prima

PAINT IN MONET'S GARDENS

This is a different post for you plein air painters! I am getting up a trip to Giverny, France in early September to paint inside Monet's Gardens daily. We will stay in a house down the street from Monet's house with a full time chef. When not in the gardens, we will paint in the village, the town of Vernon, the countryside, the Seine River, and an old mill. If you have ever wanted to see Monet's Gardens, this is the way to go so you can actually paint there! We have a studio where we can store our "stuff" and paint inside anytime. Non-painters are welcome with you. They can enjoy the quiet village, our daily excursions, or have side trips of their own.

Email me: Durindacheek@gmail.com if you are interested in learning more. I have a deadline of Feb 5 to gather a list of painters interested to hold that week.

"Trailhead" by Jenna Star Friedman

This plein air painting is one in my series of paintings done for the show at Brooker Creek Preserve in Tarpon Springs, FL. The exhibit will run from January 2 through March 1, 2009 at the Gallery in the Preserve. This painting was done with pastels on site. It took two days for me to complete. All paintings in the exhibit were done in plein air over several months at Brooker Creek Preserve, located off Keystone Rd. in Tarpon Springs. We are very proud to be able to put on this exhibit as the paintings demonstrate our love of natural Florida. The show is titled: VANISHING FLORIDA - PRESERVATION THROUGH ART, BROOKER CREEK by the WEST COAST PLEIN AIR PAINTERS. If you are in the area, please stop by to see the work by me and fellow artists of West Coast Plein Air.

Short Plein Air Demo from Appalachian State University by Bernie Rosage Jr.

There's a small park in the center of campus at Appalachian State University (ASU) in Boone, North Carolina that is one of my favorite spots to paint en plein aire. My wife dropped me off with easel and painting gear in hand buying me two hours time while she took the kids to the library. The weather was clear and warm for Boone in late December... around 55 degrees... perfect painting weather!
I positioned myself along a walking path in the park with a great view of the campus bell tower... my focal point.

I met many nice folks walking and jogging along the path... it's a wonder I finished the painting before my wife returned with the numerous conversations I had. Knowing the short time frame I had to work with I had to do some mental editing and only included the
elements necessary to make the piece work compositionally.

Stage 1... First I sketched a "rule of thirds" grid to help position the focal point on my panel. I then began to block in the important shapes with burnt sienna and ultra marine thinned with odorless mineral spirits.
Stage 2... I began to block in with more opaque paint defining the shapes and values more. I mixed Liquin Impasto Gel with all my pigment mixtures to speed drying times knowing I would be transporting this one back to the coast in a Honda CRV packed to it's gills with luggage, kids, and two cats.

Stage 3... I began working in some detail. Note my editing consisted of leaving out a few trees and the gazebo. Often times you know when something in a painting just isn't working... that's how it was with the evergreen tree on the left for me. My evergreen looked more like a sycamore giving half the painting a visual tension with the bare tree on the right... it was as if I had two seasons (summer and winter) within one painting.

Stage 4... With that said... the best thing to do was wipe it out... I could have licked it to death trying to fix it but I learned sometime back it is better for me to wipe it clean and start fresh. Many times the plein air painter has to wipe his whole panel clean... we call that a "scrapper".
Stage 5... Adding more detail and refining areas. My palette for this painting consisted of cad lemon yellow, cad yellow medium, yellow ocher, terra rosa, burnt sienna, alizarin crimson, viridian, cerulean blue, ultra marine blue, and titanium white.
.
Stage 6.... The Finished work... just in time... my wife showed up just as I was signing it.

My Lil' Painting Buddy, Olivia, and I set out on another plein air painting adventure recently. We went to one of our favorite spots at the Cedar Point branch of the Croatan National Forest. I got my Lil' Buddy all set up and painting and I picked out a good view for myself. As I began setting up my french easel I discovered something... Whoops... I forgot my brushes... they were on my desk at home just where I left them while packing my gear. Adapting to the dilemma I decided to do my painting totally with my palette knives which were luckily packed in my easel. The result was something totally different than you are used to seeing from me... I enjoyed the freedom of doing something totally different and fresh.

reflections, goals, insights

I'm not a person who makes New Year's resolutions, but I do take time to redefine myself and look through fresh eyes occasionally. Working outside my comfort zone and painting with more insight, I hope to become a better painter. I've been self-limiting this year, but reflections on the past only serve to cast more light upon the future.

The subject of this plein air painting is an old oak tree situated on a knoll which overlooks a nearby Civil War battlefield. The tree has become a fixture in many of my paintings. It seems I'm captivated by Nature's light and how it plays across the area. Studying the tree has helped me 'see' rather than just 'look'. I'm always amazed at God's palette and how we mortals struggle to capture His works on canvas.
